Leweston Working Group

The Leweston Working Group is a group of parents working to reopen Leweston School. We are independent of the company in liquidation and its owners.

Leweston is closed. It does not have to stay that way.

In October 2026, Leweston School in Sherborne was shut without notice, halfway through half-term. Parents, staff, and friends of the school are working together to bring it back.

#SaveLeweston

Gaudere et bene facere: rejoice and do well. The school’s motto since 1891.

Latest updates, 1 November 2026

Show of support. We are assembling at Leweston from 07:00 on Monday 2 November, ahead of a peaceful show of support at 08:00. Please park in the main car parks, where volunteers will direct you, then gather behind the school beside the tennis courts. There will be a short address at about 08:30 on what has happened, what has been achieved in the first few days, and what comes next. Press will be in attendance. We aim to finish by 09:30.

Where things stand. The community has pledged around £700,000 so far, and the petition is close to 3,000 signatures. Money is also being raised for teachers and staff through the Leweston Hardship Fund. We now have a much clearer picture of what parents intend to do, and a poll of teachers and staff is under way. We are likely to have to work with the insolvency practitioners, which may delay our work on a sustainable future for Leweston. We hope Parliament will hear about our situation on Monday.

What happened

On 27 October 2026, during the autumn half-term, families were told that Leweston would close with immediate effect and would not reopen after the holiday. Staff were reportedly told shortly before parents. Around 570 pupils and 100 nursery children lost their school, and 180 staff lost their jobs.

In December 2025, the school’s trustees transferred its operation to a new company owned by Concept Education. That company ran the school for three terms. It has since entered liquidation, and licensed insolvency practitioners have been appointed.

The closure has been raised in Parliament and covered by national media. Local MPs have called for answers about how a 135-year-old school with hundreds of pupils could close overnight.

We will update this page as we learn more. We only publish what we can confirm.

The impact

  • Around 570 pupils were given days to find a new school, and the schools families were directed to do not have space for all of them.
  • Around 100 nursery children have nowhere to go, with most local nurseries full.
  • Some 180 staff lost their jobs and were not paid for October, in an area with few comparable jobs.
  • Staff have stayed on site unpaid to look after returning boarders and the horses, and to keep the site safe.
  • Children with special educational needs, whom Leweston supported individually, are being told by other schools that their needs are too complex.
  • Community groups that used the school’s facilities, from swimming to fitness clubs, have lost them.

How you can help

Every one of these makes a difference. If you can only do one thing, complete the questionnaire: it tells the rescue team how many families would return, which is the first thing any funder asks.

  • Tell us your plans (parents)

A short, confidential questionnaire about whether your children would return, and what support you could offer. Nothing you say is a commitment.

    Complete the questionnaire
  • Join the contact list

Sign up to the central contact database so we can email you updates. If you are a parent, joining also gives you access to the secure parent portal. Please complete one form for each parent or guardian, even in the same household.

The rescue plan

Leweston’s day-to-day running was close to breaking even. It failed because of how it was owned and financed. A group of parents, working with legal and financial advisers, is preparing a plan to reopen the school on a footing that addresses both.

Our staff

Leweston’s teachers and staff are the school. We intend to offer every member of staff the chance to return.

Supporting those affected

We will make good the October pay staff lost, and set up a hardship fund for staff and families facing real difficulty because of the closure. It will have clear criteria and be assessed confidentially.

Ownership

A not-for-profit charity with a new independent board, on which parents, staff, and the Catholic community are represented. No single owner, no investor taking money out, and protections so the school can never again be sold out from under its families.

Sustainable fees

Fees will move gradually towards those of comparable local schools while staying below the local average. Families who return this academic year are protected from sharp increases.

Proper business oversight

The new board will include people with finance, legal, and commercial experience, with a finance committee, independent audit, and clear early-warning measures. The school will have the business guidance and scrutiny it lacked before.

Rebuilding numbers

A clear plan to bring families back and welcome new ones, with the school’s 46-acre estate and facilities also put to good use outside term time.

Targeted support

Scholarships and help for families in need continue, within a budget the school can sustain.

Financial discipline

Every surplus is reinvested in the school, and a cash reserve is built so it can withstand difficult years. The board reviews the accounts monthly, and supporters receive an annual report.

A cautious plan

The plan is modelled on fewer than a third of pupils returning and five years to rebuild. The funding we are seeking is based on that cautious case, not the best case.

Timing

We aim to reopen as soon as funding, the site, and registration allow, and no later than the start of the spring term in January 2027.

Information for parents

Fees you have already paid

If you paid fees in advance, you may be a creditor of the company in liquidation. A solicitor is acting collectively for Leweston parents: to register your claim, email [email protected] with your name, your children’s names, and what you paid. Keep your invoices, receipts, and all correspondence from the school. If you paid by credit card, ask your card provider about a claim under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act; if by debit card, ask your bank about a chargeback. Time limits apply, so do this soon.

Finding a place in the meantime

Many families have arranged temporary places elsewhere. That does not stop you returning. The rescue plan protects families who rejoin during this academic year from sharp fee rises.

Children with additional needs

If your child has an education, health and care plan, contact your local authority’s SEND team, who have a duty to help find a suitable placement.

This is general information, not legal or financial advice.

For benefactors

Reopening Leweston needs funding to cover the years while pupil numbers rebuild. The rescue plan is built on a cautious case, and the funding we are seeking is sized to it.

How your support is used

To reopen the school, make good staff’s lost October pay, fund a hardship fund for affected staff and families, and run the school until it returns to surplus. Every surplus after that is reinvested in the school, and supporters receive an annual report on how their money has been used.

Ways to support

We welcome gifts of any size. For those who would prefer their support to be repaid over time, we are developing a parent-owned structure that can accept longer-term loans as well as gifts. Details will follow once legal and tax advice is complete.

Talk to us

If you are considering a significant gift or loan, we would be glad to share the full business plan and financial model. Email the rescue team and we will arrange a conversation.

The senior school moves to Leweston Manor, home to Trinity Chapel, one of the first post-Reformation churches in the country.

  3. 2018

    Leweston becomes fully co-educational.

  4. 2025

The trustees transfer the school’s operation to a company owned by Concept Education.

  5. 2026

The school is closed without notice during the October half-term.

  6. Now

Parents, staff, and friends work to bring Leweston back.

Questions

Who is the Leweston Working Group?

A working group of Leweston parents, supported by parents with legal, financial, and business experience, working alongside staff and the wider school community. See who we are.

Is filling in the questionnaire a commitment?

No. Responses are non-binding and confidential to the working group. They are shared outside the group only as anonymous totals.

Can the school really reopen?

It depends on three things: enough families committing to return, enough funding to cover the recovery period, and agreement with the liquidators and the owners of the site. We are working on all three, and we will be honest here about progress.

What will my donation be used for?

Reopening the school and keeping it running while pupil numbers rebuild. Any rescue will be run as a not-for-profit, with surpluses reinvested in the school and an annual report to supporters.

Will the same teachers be there?

We want to bring back as many of Leweston’s staff as possible. Every week the school stays closed makes that harder, which is why timing matters so much.
